This paper presents an innovative use of Sentinel-2 datasets to manage and organize archaeological surveys. Knowledge of the territory is customary for the process of organizing and carrying out fieldwalking surveys with excellent results. Good datasets will help to answer archaeological and historical questions present at the roots of any research project.
This method was tested in different survey projects carried out in three different countries (Italy, Portugal and Spain) 3 during the late-winter and early spring of 2017 and 2018, a period in which cereal crops are in a crucial stage of its cycle and still differences in growth can be detected by means of examining the spectral footprint. This paper introduces some of the basic methodological questions while an in-depth study of results and its relationship with broader questions of visibility and survey is in preparation.
The method proposed is based on locating, prior to the fieldwork, the field plots that show a lower presence of vegetation cover, or preferably bare soil areas, in a straightforward way. In order to do so, we used multispectral images of the Sentinel-2 mission, whose temporal and spatial resolution, together with its free distribution, make it a good tool not only for the identification of archaeological elements, but also for the organization of field surveys.

Blending photogrammetric and Structure from Motion techniques with
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) is a commonly used approach for the
documentation and analysis of archaeological sites. Using the dense 3D
point clouds generated from these techniques, two main photogrammetric
products are created: orthophotos and Digital Surfaces Models (DSM).
Depending on the UAV technology, the flight parameters, the topography
and land cover of the flown area, DSMs and orthophotos are delivered with
varying positional accuracies and output scales. In this paper, the positional
accuracy and maximum allowable scale of these products generated by
complete automation of flight mode and processing workflow are assessed.
Moreover, three known International Mapping Standards (IMS) are validated
using independent checkpoints, obtained by geodetic Global Navigation
Satellite Systems receivers, in two Spanish study areas. The results show that
accurate photogrammetric products adapted to the IMS can be successfully
obtained by the automation of the photogrammetric workflow.

Massive change has impacted the extent and landscape context of the settlement of Cerro de la Mesa on the Tagus River after a dam was built in the 1960s. As a result there are interpretative and archaeological problems, such as the original size of the settlement, the line of its perimeter, and the locations of entrances and the necropolis. By using digital photogrammetry with historical vertical aerial photographs from the 1950s a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the original surface of the area before the construction of the dam has been obtained. This paper
examines the technical issues in generating the model, the reasons for using the images instead of other possible choices, as well as technical challenges commonly shared
when working with historical images that lack calibration data. The photogrammetric process followed may be applicable in other geographic areas with similar characteristics and problems.

Photogrammetric flights made by the United States Air Force during the 1950s using the Fairchild T-11 camera were widespread throughout southern Europe, South America and various other regions. Photographs from these flights are valuable tools for analysing various geo-temporal phenomena. However, there is a lack of information available about how the flights were undertaken and how the camera was calibrated and used, which has not allowed photogrammetric use of this source until now. The available data are researched along with approximations to the missing data in order to improve the mapping accuracy.

A general overview of the three year’s project near Lake Tana (NW Ethiopia) is presented here. This project’s aim is the study, excavation, restoration and public projection of Jesuit’s XVIIth century presence related buildings throughout the area. After a first cataloguing and evaluation campaign archaeological works were carried on at Azäzo site, where several buildings were located including a Jesuit church, a large pool and other less defined buildings. Most of the complex was surrounded by a closing wall with round towers. Along with the archaeological campaigns, a public archaeology project was developed in order to make local authorities and surrounding neighbourhood aware of this settlement relevance, and the necessity of taking care and concerning about its conservation as an important part of their historical Heritage.

In this article we discuss the motivations, aims, and preliminary results of working with a local community in Ethiopia. Trying to escape from the (neo)colonial archaeology that is still practised in Africa, this project aims to achieve a cooperative and participative archaeology. This work with the community has been one of our main priorities in our last seasons, and although we have focused on elementary school and university students, we have opened up a number of different paths to follow in future years. The experience has been very positive, and engagement with local people has helped us to create awareness about the importance of cultural heritage, hopefully ensuring the future protection of the sites.

This paper presents an analysis of a stone iconography represented by big sized sculptures of bulls and pigs (verracos in the local terminology). These sculptures are considered as specific from the territory occupied by Vettons, one of the pre-roman groups that inhabited the interior of the Iberian Peninsula. The objective is to compare the former hypothesis as landscape markers with our area using GIS and stadistical analysis as main tools of research.

This paper tackles international adoption processes as a set of educational practices which involve strategies of transmission/ incorporation of culture. This means the construction of relational identities or subjectivities, in particular those of adoptive and “adopting” father and mother. The research has been implemented in Spain with an ethnographic nature. It has been carried out on two different types of space: the first one is that considered as space of “formal education”, related to learning activities supported by the relevant institutions in international
adoption. The second one has been considered as a space of “informal education”. We present a description of the kinds of adoptive parents the Spanish relevant institutions are constructing, and also an account of the principles and assumptions on which the task of identity configuration this institutions do is based. These results are finally inserted in socio-anthropological discussions about: 1) the concepts of culture and education; 2) the expansion of “the educative thing” as a measure of public policy in order to solve social difficulties; and 3) the devaluation of lay wisdom by experts systems.
