The aim of this monograph is to show the results of an archaeoethnological work developed in the area of As Brañas de Sar, in the surroundings of the town of Santiago de Compostela. The area comprises a basin around the Sar river that holds a traditional agrarian landscape that preserves in a fairly good shape the remains of a long time peasant work. Along with cultivation terraces and fields, a number of architectural features are scattered on the area, many of them related to the management and distribution of water. The Sar river, and the different channels, reservoirs and water mills related to it, are the basic features that shape the whole landscape here. In the very recent past, a progressive ruin of the area has begun to grew, which is visible in the abandonmet of both the river course itself and its environments. A thorough knowledge of that space would allow for a better understanding of its origins and historical value, that, in its turn, would allow a more coherent development of new uses in the area.

The line of research on “the archaeological study of rural spaces and their elements”, as developed within the Laboratorio de Patrimonio, Paleoambiente e Paisaxe, is the framework that allow the analysis of the processes of construction of Galician rural landscape, using the data resulting from a number of archaeological projects developed in relation to the evaluation and assessment of public works. Specifically this presentation deals with the study of cultivation terraces and embankments, understood as artificial elements either intentionally built or side effects of human labor and conceived to enlarge the spaces of cultivation and/or to facilitate the spread of certain crops. A number of new radiocarbon dates will allow to argue that this kind of structures can be viewed as true chronological indicators of the different moments and processes of action of peasant communities over the environment. Simultaneously I will make an attempt to clarify the different types of structures found in the area of analysis, by looking at aspects such as the stratigraphical sequences, the processes of formation and/or construction, the presence or absence of specific formal elements, etc. The work carried out has also taken into account other archaeological elements such as pits, which, after their contexts, position and shape, can be related to old agrarian elements currently invisible on surface.

This document presents the results of a study about Agrarian Land Space nearby Elviña’s Hillfort, in A Coruña. It was making as a part of a research plan to make the Management Document of Elviña’s Hillfort which pretends the enhancement of it. Elviña’s landscape is a model of traditional and rural territory of Galicia but it’s degrading for the influence of A Coruña urban area. The material elements and agrarian forms are walls and another agricultural structures in order to accommodate the space for land exploitation. This landscape was growing up during the last millennium and his role was to provide agricultural supplies to the city.

Different types of agrarian spaces comprise types of Cultural Landscapes with great historical ‘depth’, the analysis and characterisation of which can be dealt with through Archaeology. A good example of this, on a small scale but for this same reason more easily comprehensible, is the agrarian space of Gaiás, which we had the opportunity to analyse as part of the Impact Evaluation resulting from construction work on a large scale public project, the future City of Culture in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, Spain). This work meant the dismantling of a specific traditional agrarian space, but at the same time gave us an opportunity to study the genealogy, formation processes and chronology of this landscape. As a result, it has been possible to define a lengthy history of the formation of a complex agrarian landscape from the High Middle Ages.

Este trabajo se basa en el estudio del paisaje rural desde el marco de investigación de la Arqueología del Paisaje y, dentro de ella, de la línea de investigación que denominamos Arqueología Rural o Arqueología del Paisaje Agrario, desarrollada en el LaPa (Laboratorio de Patrimonio) del CSIC. Desde esta línea se vienen analizando determinadas formas y elementos relacionados con los espacios agrarios y cuya aplicación nos está permitiendo llegar a conocer, entender e interpretar las diferentes formas de ocupar, construir y gestionar el paisaje agrario rural. Mostraremos cómo se tratan desde esta línea de investigación las estructuras y las formas que conforman los sistemas de ordenación del terrazgo que las sociedades campesinas fueron construyendo a lo largo del tiempo y cuyos resultados nos sitúan en los primeros siglos de la Alta Edad Media para los inicios de la transformación de nuestro paisaje rural, que todavía conservamos y que sigue en uso en muchas de las zonas de este territorio. Es por ello que en este trabajo se presenta un catálogo en el que se incluyen diferentes elementos agrarios sobre los que se ha intervenido para, de este modo, mostrar la gran potencialidad de los mismos en cuanto a resultados, ya que la intervención en ellos hace posible indagar en los procesos constructivos y formativos del paisaje rural tradicional.

Durante los trabajos de Evaluación de Impacto para la construcción de la Autopista Santiago-Alto de Santo Domingo se documentó en el lugar de A Pousada (San Cristovo do Eixo, Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña) un conjunto de materiales cerámicos en superficie, que se adscribieron a época romana y medieval. Durante los trabajos de excavación, y por los materiales documentados, se constata la existencia de un yacimiento adscrito a época medieval y posiblemente vinculado a un despoblado. En este contexto se ha realizado un estudio del paisaje agrario así como de la microtoponimia existente en la zona y al mismo tiempo poniendo los resudados de esta excavación en relación con otros estudios arqueológicos realizados sobre terrazas agrarias hechos en el entorno de Santiago de Compostela.

This paper makes an initial approach to the documentation of an archaeological site in Canexol beach in the Ons islet (Pontevedra, Galicia). According to the evidences documented so far, it looks like a series of fish salting facilities. Tha site, that was previously unknown within the achaeological literature, fills a void in the sequence of occupation of the islet, that should have been inhabited since the earlier prehistory to the present day. At the same time, this site underlines the importance of the sea resources for the live in the islet, very evident in the present day but also remarkable in the ancient times.

This text presents some research conducted in relation to the building of the Galician City of Culture, un Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, NW Spain). This project allowed us to apply an extensive programme of Archaeological Impact Assesment and the Correction which made it possible to identify the spatial results of past social action on the land. A full superficial and subsoil study of present terraces and fieldsystems was carried out. This work showed that present rural landscape constitutes a Cultural Landscape shaped in early medieval times(from 5th to 6th century AD). Archaeological methodologies, combined with radiocarbon, palaeoenvironmental and historical research, recorded and identified the chronology and formation processes of such landscape. This was the first time that this sort of study was developed in Galicia.

The paper shows the results of a filedwork project carried out in the mountain range of Serra do Suido. The project was part of a plan of Counterbalance Measures designed to compensate the cultural impact cause by the construction of a wind farm. The results shown correspond to a superficial survey developed to record the cultural heritage elements in the Suido range, consisting basically of a wide variety of constructions related to traditional stockbreeding. The range was, until recent time, the space for the development of a series of practices of cattle raising quite particular and specific of some mountain areas of Galicia. Simultaneously the paper recalls the personality of D. Xaquín Lorenzo, the most significant Galician etnoghapher, since his reserach on the cattle rising on the range of Serra de Leboreiro were extremely helpful in the foundations of this piece of research.

A través del caso de la remodelación de la aldea de Olveiroa en el concello de Dumbría (A Coruña), este ensayo analiza los usos que diferentes agentes sociales vinculados al camino de Santiago a su paso por Olveiroa hacen del concepto de “patrimonio”. Las ausencias y presencias de este concepto en los discursos y las acciones de los diversos agentes sociales implicados en el camino, nos permiten analizar para qué se usa el patrimonio, cómo se usa, las lógicas que hay detrás de sus usos y los procesos de naturalización implicados en la patrimonialización del camino, destacando la ausencia del término “patrimonio inmaterial”.
La aldea de Olveiroa acoge desde el año 2001 un albergue para peregrinos promovido por el ayuntamiento y construido a raíz de la compra de varias casas de piedra en estado de abandono que se rehabilitaron, convirtiendo Olveiroa en una “aldea-albergue” . Esta valoración intrínseca de la construcción tradicional sirvió para recrear de nuevo una aldea, que estaba en proceso de abandono. El nuevo valor arquitectónico de lo antiguo vino de la mano de iniciativas vinculadas al sector terciario, orientadas a la explotación turística de este territorio. Ahora en la aldea hay además un bar, un restaurante-pensión, y una pensión.
En antropología, se ha dado hace más de una década el paso de una concepción de patrimonio como algo estático, centrada en los elementos patrimoniales, a una visión dinámica, centrada en los procesos de patrimonialización, en los procesos políticos y simbólicos mediante los que se construye el patrimonio (Cantwell 1993; Kirshenblatt-Gimblett 1998; Prats 2004). Utilizamos el término “procesos de patrimonialización” para referirnos a la construcción del patrimonio, a los procesos por los que “algo” (entendiendo ese “algo” como cualquier práctica o “bien patrimonial”) llega a ser considerado valioso y percibido como “propio”. Como señalan Juan Agudo y Esther Fernández de Paz, los bienes que se patrimonializan son los que se reseñan como de especial significación dentro de cada contexto cultural (1999: 7).

A illa de Ons, o defínese coma unha paisaxe de gran relevancia dende varios puntos de vista. Partindo do natural, non en vano forma parte do Parque Nacional Marítimo-Terrestre das Illas Atlánticas de Galicia dende o 2002 xunto cos arquipélagos de Cíes, Sálvora e Cortegada, e entrelazándose co cultural, xa non só polos numerosos vestixios que nos ofrecen a grande cantidade de datos sobre o pasado da illa senón tamén porque resulta moi significativo que sexa a única illa galega que continua habitada, a excepción da illa de Arousa. Os seus usos, costumes, o tanxible e o intanxible dunha sociedade actual na que se mesturan as pegadas do seu pasado e a dinamicidade do seu presente.
Neste artigo amosaremos os resultados parciais dun traballo feito na illa de Ons no ano 2009 a través da realización dun proxecto encargado pola dirección do Parque Nacional co fin de identificar e documentar o Patrimonio Cultural da illa , profundizando no coñecemento do espazo cultural a través da arqueoloxía, da etnografía e doutras disciplinas, buscando recoñecer as diferentes etapas crono-culturais que deron lugar á configuración actual deste espazo tradicional.
O que aquí presentamos, veñen a ser os resultados da prospección arqueolóxica feita na illa xunto cunha aproximación a interpretación dos datos obtidos. Así, desenvolvéronse traballos de campo de prospección superficial arqueolóxica co fin de obter unha catalogación fiable, das entidades que puideran aparecer no transcurso do traballo e revisando a situación patrimonial daquelas xa catalogadas.

[GA]O traballo que presentamos a continuación enmárcase dentro do proxecto denominado "Procesos de formación e cambio da paisaxe cultural do Parque Nacional das Illas Atlánticas de Galicia" (HAR2010-22004). Este estudo trata de profundar no coñecemento do espazo cultural a través de prospección arqueolóxica superficial, e de recoñecer as diferentes etapas crono-culturais que deron lugar á configuración actual deste espazo singular de illas. O traballo organízase en tres grandes bloques. Na primeira descríbense os plantexamentos e obxectivos do estudo. A segunda parte contén a presentación da metodoloxía seguida ao longo do proxecto, o inventario das entidades culturais rexistradas e a súa valoración. Por último analízase a vulnerabilidade no contexto litoral dalgunhas das entidades documentadas nas illas, valorando, ao mesmo tempo, o seu estado de conservación. [EN] The work we present here is part of the project "Procesos de formación e cambio da paisaxe cultural do Parque Nacional das Illas Atlánticas de Galicia" (HAR2010-22004). This study seeks to deepen the understanding of the cultural space through surface archaeological survey, and to recognize the different cultural chronological stages that led to the current configuration of this unique area of islands. The text is organised into three sections. In the first one, the guidelines and objectives of the study are presented. In the second one, the methodology followed and the cultural assets identified through during the fieldwork are analysed and discussed. Finally, the vulenrability of several sites identified is discussed and evaluated in their coastal contex

In this chapter we analyze the discourses and conflicts of the actors linked to the island of Ons (Galicia, Spain). On this island, which is a National Park, we address the following questions: Who are the social actors of the island? What kinds of conflicts are occurring on it? Who is involved? How to explain the existence of conflicts on the island now? To answer these questions, we follow a multidisciplinary approach based on Rural Archeology and Anthropology. As main results we identify five key social actors whose discourses are very differently linked to one another. At the same time, we could see a shift in landscape management strategies that confronts different models of urbanity and rurality, which are part of the dichotomies of modernity.
