ABSTRACT
This paper presents part of the results in two research projects about the architecture of the Roman Lusitania. The bridge of Alcantara (Cáceres) has been object of an exhaustive study, which includes new graphic documentation and the analysis of historical and structural transformations of the monument. Different evidences support the hypothesis of an existing architectural project for an earlier bridge, which probably was never finished.
Two external arches and a vault of a structure underneath the Trajan bridge indicates the existence of a very different construction to the monument that can be seen nowadays. That first bridge, crucial for the economic exploitation of the surrounding areas since the early Roman period, might not have been an architectonical type suitable for the topography of the river Tajo area.

In this paper we show an overview of the knowledge we have obtained about the morphology and historical development of the townscape of the Roman site of Contributa Iulia Ugultunia (Medina de las Torres, Badajoz). To historiographical research and a sustained excavation activity we can add the contribution of a battery of non-destructive methods: aerial photography, geophysical and surface survey. We will make a detailed review of the information that these combined techniques can provide for the knowledge of basic questions regarding the spatial structure of the site: delimitation of the walled enclosure, urban layout, public areas or extramural activity.
